Hot Rock Ache

I've been lucky enough to purchase a good bit of music lately, both young and old. Here's a brief rundown of stuff I can't put down which will hopefully peak some of your interest.

Dirty Projectors - Rise Above
Absolutely phenomenal album. I was quite surprised not to see it on any of the year end lists here. I saw these guys (and gals) at the Beat Kitchen performing tracks off this album prior to picking it up and was blown away not only by the seamless transitions of Longstreths frantic guitar work but the impeccable vocal harmonies of his two leading ladies. Flawless stuff, even live.

Do Make Say Think - You, You're A History In Rust
Picked this up after seeing it on one of the year end lists here. This album definitely didn't get enough exposure on many of the internet music blogs. Beautiful from start to finish. I believe this definitely goes far beyond some of their previous efforts. The inclusion of vocals was a very nice addition. The somber, sometimes soaring vocals on A With Living get into my head for days. I believe the standout track to be the third one, The Universe!. So so good.

CAN - Delay 1968
One album I've been meaning to pick up for a long long time now and it sure does not disappoint. Malcolm Mooney was doing the vocals for this early incarnation of CAN and his manic ramblings somehow still find some sort of pop/psychedelic sensibilities embodied by that period of time. This work is probably a little more cohesive than some of their later stuff but is still progressive and experimental. This record is a must have.

Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover
A never fail option on the jukebox at good ol' Stadium West. This is another album which didn't get as much recognition from the 2007 year end lists as it definitely deserved (well from P4k at least).

No Age - Weirdo Rippers
Great lo-fi record from LA post-hardcore guys Randy Randall and Dean Spunt. Not too much to wrap your head around here. Just some straight forward, noisy, raucous sound explosions. I couldn't keep the smile off my face seeing these guys play with Liars at the Metro. Good times.

Other records that I'm throwing my support behind that don't need any explanation:
Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Marnie Stern - In Advance of the Broken Arm
Radiohead - In Rainbows

I'm also proposing that The Halo Benders' Don't Touch My Bikini be a must play for any dance party in 2k8.

And while I'm taking up a bit of your time, I'd like to use this space to shamelessly plug some local bands.

Meah Fellows I grew up with in the suburbs now living in the Pilsen neighborhood at the Little Flower Shoppe, an old converted flower shop/green house. Anyone living in the city that wants to play a really good house venue should get a hold of these guys for a show.

Floating Ghost I play in this band with a few old friends. We just put up some live recordings of some new material while we try and finish up an album. If anyone in the Chicago land area wants to play a show with us, reply to this post or send us a message at the myspace page.

Oh my. Yes, I certainly did mean the Dirty Projectors rather than Dirty Projects. Thanks for the heads up.

Delay 1968 is one of my faves. i got into Can when i was fresh outta high school because i thought it would make me look cool. turns out no one gives a shit, but it began a life-long journey of listening to anything by Can i could get my hands on. Delay 1968 (or "Prepare to Meet Thy Pnoom" as it was going to be called had it been released when it was supposed to have been) remains some of their best stuff.

i'm definitely going back to that dirty projectors record this week. i bought it, played it three or four times but definitely haven't given it the proper. david longstreth is a pretty brilliant dude, though. i've seen them live twice and hope to again when they're in Chicago in april. one of the best lineups i've ever seen was when they opened for grizzly bear, two of the best live bands around today.
