Sebastien Tellier - Divine

This was an easy one for me today. I just finished making my Winter Rythm & Blues mix (which I'll be posting later on in the month) after a major last-minute hand-wringing session. Last Tuesday, I went to Schuba's to see Paris' electrofunk spitballer--often brilliantly--, Sebastien Tellier. On the drive home with two of my friends, I wanted to listen to that fourth track again on the new record because Max had arrived to the show a bit late and missed it.

In the first thirty seconds of the track, I said "This is the best pop song of the year!" without the slightest strain of incredulity.

"So...is it on your winter mix?", Christopher turned and asked me.

The question made sense. I had just declared it the best pop song of the year. Wouldn't that be something fitting--maybe even essential--to a mix representing my annual crop of favorites? For the past week, I've been mentally irretrievable about the mix. I was realistic about the urge: "Should I make up a new track listings and slide a new number into the sweet '7' spot?" But then I was kind of a purist too: "I can't change it now. I've come too far with this to let a finished product be altered!" It was getting pretty heavy in my head. After days of trying to fit the song onto the playlist, I gave up. It didn't fit. It just plain didn't fit. Today's post is my redemption for the realist in me who loves abetting the purist just to watch him tire and weaken.

Anyway, this song is called "Divine" and it's the fourth track off of this year's Sexuality by Sebastien Tellier. It's kind of the outlandishly direct pop song from an album that meanders a bit into broader directions. It's the one you love the most though you're a bit ashamed that it's also the most overtly poppy.
