So the 'Sunny Day Real Estate' purists will probably want to stone me once they see I have posted a song from the bands final album, The Rising Tide, generated in the year 2000 (said with ghostly Conan O'Brien vocals).
I understand this is by far their best studio produced album. I understand it is missing one of the original members. I understand that their sound changed between 1992 and 2000. I understand that a lot of bands produce some of their best work in their early years, and I understand if people are grumpy-pants that they now have to call the band 'Fire Theft' instead of Sunny Day Real Estate.
This all being said, I will not deny that this album (and song) is wonderfully great. I very much enjoy talented rhythm sections, and William Goldsmith (drums) and Nate Mendel (bass) were, in my opinion, one of the most overlooked and unappreciated cores of the 90's/00's. Goldsmith is so solid in the pocket and has savory chops. There are many songs that show off his abilities but I think 'Disappear' serves as a good platform. As for Mr. Mendel, I really believe his bass work (coupled with Goldsmith) are what brings this song to life. Listen for it... it is there. Listen to how Goldsmith and Mendel play off one another. It is great. It romps with vigor.
The bridge - i guess you would call it - at the 2:22 mark, kicks me in the face with 'the rock'. The only real downside to the song is the end. I don't like how it just stops... it just ends with that big open note and leaves me a little unsatisfied.
So to the Sunny Day Real Estate purists, I hope you aren't too crotchety about this song/album. It is good, maybe not amazing, but pretty great...... me thinks.

classic record. sunny day is indomitable--they were around just long enough to cut some great records and broke up before they could run it into the ground. i remember listening to "the ocean" on repeat my sophomore year of college.
I love Sunny Day, but you have to remember that Jeremy Enigk was playing bass on this album. Nate Mendel was in the Foo Fighters, and he had devoted his time to that band. So - give Jeremy some credit!
Also, I still think that "How It Feels to Be Something On" is their best album. Check it out.
wow, I had no idea... looks like I should have done more homework on this one ha ha, 'rookie mistake'. I am ashamed
and not to mention, it is more of a given that Enigk is a mastermind. No disrespect to him at all :), just thought Goldsmith and Mendel needed a little 'at-a-boy' ha... poor rhythm section players, always being overlooked :) ha
i remember WXRT in chicago previewing this album before it came out on their "indie stuff" show. i was a big SDRE fan (i also think "How It Feels..." remains their best record - should have been to the 90s what "Joshua Tree" was to the 80s), and the few tracks they previewed sounded incredible - this was one of them.
turns out i kinda hated the rest of the album past the first four songs, but doggonit Hauser, you made a great choice.
