Soon Enough - The Constantines / Women of the World - Jim O'Rourke

So this is kind of a thematic dissertation of two songs today. At first, I had the idea to write my thoughts on “Soon Enough” by The Constantines, a song that has lived many lives since I fell in love with it the first time when it came out in 2005. As my friend Andrew once mentioned, the album title, Tournament of Hearts(a phrase from the song “Soon Enough”), is a strange reference to an annual all-women’s curling competition in Canada.

Your gentleman father would pray for a daughter, as he walked from room to room saying ‘Women are winning the tournament of hearts. Somebody's got to lose...’

The quote from the father must’ve been a reference to this competition while the narrator’s perception of the quote seems to be a misunderstanding that becomes a metaphor for a human condition.

To me, that’s such a profound insight on the journey into manhood. Maybe it’s hokey to over-explain the metaphor but thinking of men as furious and impulsive in youth and women as the only hope in resolving the disrepair is such a remarkably interesting thought.

The second song, “Prelude to 110 or 220/Women of the World,” by Jim O’Rourke is a sprawling eight-and-half minute pop experiment continuing where The Constantines left off. It’s a call and response.

Women of the world take over cos if you don’t, the world will come to an end and it won’t take long.

That’s all the more I’ll explain. The rest I’ll let you pick up on. Oh yeah, and fuck this noise. Ascribe your own damned meaning to it!
