J Dilla - Stop

The late great J Dilla will probably be most fondly remembered for his 2006 album Donuts, which oddly enough was more a producer's sketchbook than a proper LP. Is that because it was the last thing he graced us with before he died, or is it because it proves that he had better ideas pinging around in his head than most producers ever get out in their entire careers? Or is it because most rappers just dampened the effect of his exquisite tracks by insisting on saying words and stuff, while Dilla's beats exist in a timeless amniotic fluid of pure feeling?

Here, he gets untold mileage out of a Dionne Warwick (a favorite source of Dilla's) sample and a few scratched and smeared syllables from gravel-voiced rapper Jadakiss.

sweet track, but is it supposed to cut off suddenly?

yeah, it just jumps right into the next song. nothing on Donuts really comes off as a completely polished whole, which is appealing and bittersweet at the same time. on the one hand, some of these tracks are perfect as is, and on the other many of them were ostensibly meant to be used by rappers and worked into finished songs (and a few have been, most notably on Ghostface's totally awesome "Whip You With a Strap".
