Teenagers - Department of Eagles

If there's one thing I don't need any help doing, it's feeling sentimental. It is, however, one of my favorite characteristics in a good song and there are too many to choose from on this year's In Ear Park by Department of Eagles. This isn't an obscure number by any means. If you haven't heard of DOE yet, it's only a matter of time before you do. They'll certainly be garnering themselves plenty of acclaim independently but, if they were to need any help, co-founder Daniel Rossen's association with indie psych folk princes Grizzly Bear couldn't hurt. He joined the band in 2004 and contributed to the writing of Grizzly Bear's Yellow House, one of 2006's best LPs. Anyway, forget about Grizzly Bear for now.

The track of the day is "Teenagers," the fourth song on In Ear Park. A rythmic piano progression anchors the track, bounces woozily and gels with the echo of hollow-bodied guitars and for-lack-of-a-better-word vaudevillian vocals. The result locks my head in a narcotic blissed out nod. It also makes me wish I was smoking grass, driving around in an Oldsmobile with my highschool sweetheart or sitting in a 24-hour diner sipping coffee with my friends. These are all good things. Enjoy.

this whole record has a huge boner for van dyke parks. there are not enough bands with huge boners for van dyke parks.

boners? it's a metaphor, harvey. and, since we are men and not devo, it's a pretty striking metaphor at that.

well, i have a pretty singular fixation on boners. one could say i have a boner for boners. please don't extend it to the other writers. huh huh - "extend."
