Naming a track of the year is pretty difficult, something akin to sifting through a whole year of time passing and picking the best three-four minutes. Who can decide? And what if someone has been recording a year-long track, wouldn't that by default be "track of the year"? Of course it would.
So what will it be this year? Will it be Portishead's "Machine Gun" a song that sampled the guntronic stylings of Portland's Johnny Machinegun? A bit of controversy has erupted within the guntronic community since Portishead used a barely altered Johnny Machinegun backbeat to shoot themselves to the top of many year-end album lists. JM himself has been nothing but appreciative of the attention it's brought him.
Or how about the Fleet Foxes "English House" which is something of a misnomer. The titular house is most likely Scottish.
Well my vote might be for MGMT's "Time to Pretend." As songs go, it is both brash and fair, allowing for a great deal of band movement within its bright popping chorus. Its sweeping resolution feels a bit like removing a mask and feeling fresh air hit your face, though the air smells strange, and the mask was your face-skin and now your under-muscles are exposed and slowly hardening. It is like growing up, or not growing up and staying exactly the same forever, except you live on a different planet now, and the planet is Earth. (Before, you lived on a planet that was not Earth)
Well objectively it is Whale's 1993 hit "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe" which I honestly enjoy more than I am comfortable with.
